Why We Skip Retinol- And What We Use Instead

Retinol has long been considered the gold standard in skincare. It’s praised for reducing fine lines, improving texture, and fading dark spots. But at Alder New York, we don’t use retinol in any of our formulas- and that’s intentional.

From increased sensitivity to pregnancy restrictions, retinol doesn’t work for everyone. That’s why we focus on proven alternatives that deliver similar results- without the irritation or risks.

The Problem with Retinol

Retinol is a synthetic derivative of vitamin A that works by accelerating cell turnover. While it’s effective, it often causes redness, peeling, and dryness- especially for those with sensitive or reactive skin. It also increases sun sensitivity and is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

At Alder New York, we believe in formulating skincare that’s gentle, inclusive, and safe, so we’ve chosen to take a different path.

Our Retinol Alternatives: Gentle, Effective, and Safe

Instead of retinol, we use plant-based and barrier-supportive ingredients backed by clinical research. These ingredients offer the benefits of retinol- like smoother texture and brighter skin- without the downsides.

Bakuchiol is a standout. This antioxidant-rich compound, derived from the babchi plant, has been clinically shown to mimic the effects of retinol- reducing the appearance of fine lines, improving skin tone, and promoting firmness. And unlike retinol, it’s non-irritating, non-photosensitizing, and considered safe for use during pregnancy. You'll find it at the core of our Nourishing Cream, which is formulated to deliver visible results while remaining gentle enough for daily use.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) helps brighten skin, reduce the appearance of pores, and support barrier health. It’s a key ingredient in our Balancing Serum, where it works alongside hyaluronic acid and willow bark extract to calm irritation and visibly even out skin tone.

Squalane, a skin-identical lipid, plays a key role in maintaining the skin’s moisture barrier. It hydrates deeply while helping active ingredients like bakuchiol absorb effectively- without causing dryness or flaking. For those seeking an extra layer of hydration or a minimal, nourishing routine, our Hydrating Oil is rich in squalane, marula, jojoba, and other botanical oils to replenish and soften skin without clogging pores.

Why This Approach Matters

We believe that skincare should work with your skin- not against it. That’s why every Alder New York formula is made for real people with real skin concerns, including sensitivity, breakouts, and life transitions like pregnancy.

By choosing retinol alternatives that are gentle, effective, and pregnancy-safe, we’re creating high-performance skincare you can trust- no matter where you are in your skincare journey.
