When and How Many Times a Day Should You Wash Your Face?

When and how many times a day should you wash your face? It's a question we get asked all the time, and it makes sense because there are a lot of contradictory answers floating around. That's because truthfully there's no one size fits all answer for everyone. But the good news is it's pretty easy to figure out what's ideal for your skin once you understand the basics.

Why To Wash Your Face At Night

Pretty much all of us need to wash our face at least once a day, preferably in the evening before bed. Washing your face before bed serves a few purposes. A good cleanser will remove any dirt and excess oil that's accumulated, as well as gently exfoliate to remove dead skin buildup that can clog pores. A PM cleanse also gets rid of makeup, SPF, and daily pollutants from walking around outside during the day.

Why To Wash Your Face In the Morning

Washing your face when you wake up is another story. For many of us, this isn't necessary. Most of us aren't exposed to outside pollutants while we're sleeping. And for those of us with dry to normal skin types, the natural oils we produce are important to maintain a healthy skin barrier- so it's not ideal to wash them away multiple times a day.

However, if you have an oilier, acne prone skin-type, you might produce excess oil while you're sleeping that leaves your skin shiny and greasy when you wake up. If that's your situation, a gentle AHA or BHA cleanser that's pH optimized, like Alder New York's low dose glycolic acid cleanser, will do a great job of gently removing excess oil and buildup and controlling oil for the rest of the day. 

Find the Skincare Routine That Works For You

If you're not sure if one or 2 times a day makes the most sense for you, try starting with an evening cleanse and skipping the morning for a few weeks to see how your skin behaves. If you've been a multiple-times-a-day face cleaner, you may find you've been over-drying your skin and dialing it back is just what you needed. And if your skin is too oily when you wake up to skip a AM cleanse, make sure you stick with gentle cleansers that won't completely strip your skin of needed moisture. Play around with it- when it comes to skincare, it's all about figuring our the routine that makes sense for you.
