I love a big juicy rare beef burger. But sometime it just doesn't cut the mustard (pun intended) and all I want is a meat-free veggie option. Luckily, I find myself in Veggie Burger Kingdom, a.k.a. Brooklyn, quite a bit. Over the years I've had the opportunity to try quite a few veggie burgers from the bland frozen Morning Star variety to the best handmade patties crafted from the freshest, tastiest ingredients. Here's my list of eight of the best veggie burgers in Brooklyn.
BAREBURGER'S FARMSTEAD BURGER 170 7TH AVE
This is your go-to vegan, low-cal, gluten free option that's just as great as all the others. The ingredients read more like a salad: Sweet potato, wild rice, green hummus, tomatoes, and baby kale. And each is served in a collard green wrap and topped with an avocado basil dressing.
TUTU'S HOMEMADE VEGGIE BURGER 25 BOGART ST
Tutu's veggie burger is crispy on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside. Made from a flavorful blend of beans and beets and then topped with avocado, herb aioli, and caramelized shallots, this hardy burger is no light fair.
SHAKE SHACK'S 'SHROOM BURGER 409 FULTON ST
If you're looking for a healthy option, forget it! Shake Shake knows how to do it: crispy fried portobello mushrooms are filled with a blend of melted munster and cheddar cheese and then topped with lettuce, tomato, and their signature shakesauce.
CHOICE MARKET'S VEGGIE BURGER 318 LAFAYETTE AVE
Choice gives the veggie burger a real spin! The patty made of lentils, chickpeas, and black beans is pretty familiar, but its toppings are where it's at. Each burger is topped with avocado, radish sprouts, tomato, cilantro, cucumber, lettuce, onion, and queso fresco served up on a brioche bun.
HI HELLO'S VEGGIE JOE 247 STARR ST
This one isn't technically a veggie burger, but it still checks all the boxes! Made from lentils, red rice, corn, and edamame, then topped with avocado, Monterey jack cheese, and spicy mayo, this joe gets two major thumbs up!
NO. 7 RESTAURANT'S TOTAL VEGETARIAN CHAOS & DESTRUCTION 7 GREENE AVE
If you missed the chance to try a burger at the No.7 Veggie pop up spot, no worries! You can now get their much lauded Chaos & Destruction veggie burger at No.7 Restaurant in Fort Greene. This veggie burger patty- a mix of roasted broccoli, mushrooms, and seitan- comes garnished with cheese, avocado, pickled beets, griddled onions, and No.7 Steak Sauce for ultimate meat-free deliciousness.
DUMONT BURGER'S VEGGIE BURGER 314 BEDFORD AVE
This Brooklyn burger joint knows how to make a burger- even a meat free one! The patty is made up of brown rice, bulgar, wheat, zucchini, sweet potato, red pepper, and pecan and is topped with special house sauce, lettuce, tomato, onions and house made pickles; a classic burger minus the classic beef patty. If you think that won't fill you up, add the mac and cheese; it's killer.
BURGER IT UP!'S VEGGIE BURGER 146 KNICKERBOCKER AVE
You wouldn't expect that this Bushwick spot could cook up an awesome veggie burger- but they sure do! Made up of a hardy list of veggies including carrots, string beans, red pepper, peas, broccoli and more, this patty will meet your daily vegetable requirements in just a few bites- but you won't stop there because this burger is too good to put down.
