DIY Turmeric Face Mask Inspired By An Indian Wedding Tradition

on

There’s almost nothing better than some Sunday evening pampering and a movie. It’s even better when we can grab all the ingredients from what we already have in our fridge or pantry for some DIY pampering action.

We’ve jumped on board the current Western-culture turmeric trend as it’s a scientifically proven health aide. Turmeric’s active ingredient is curcumin, an antioxidant with strong anti-inflammatory properties. Because of this, it can be a great topical treatment for acne and puffy skin. There is also some evidence that a topical turmeric application can inhibit the formation of skin tumors, which is a pretty great bonus to great looking skin!

For this face mask, we were inspired by the the Indian Haldi tradition, in which the bride and groom apply a turmeric paste on their face and body a day before, or the morning of, their wedding, to cleanse the body and soul and protect the couple. The paste is usually a mix of turmeric, sandalwood powder, and milk or rose water. In addition to spiritual protection, it also leaves the bride and groom with clear glowing skin.

We used plain yogurt for our mask to create a thicker paste. The lactic acid in yogurt is great for dissolving dead skin, and works as an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Combined with anti-septic turmeric, this is a serious acne fighting mask!

We also used a few drops of sandalwood essential oil (also an acne fighter and skin softener) to mimic the Haldi paste, but feel free to skip it if you don't have any lying around. Now we just have to decide which movie we’re going to screen and we’re good to go.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you're wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty (and it's a lazy Sunday, so you should be!) because turmeric can stain.
