Jump Start Your Spring Cleaning With This Safe Homemade Everyday Cleaner
Maybe it’s just having more hours with sunlight to really highlight the dirt and grime, but the beginning of spring gives us the itch to clean. Even if you’re not making a whole event out of spring cleaning, when you do clean your house you should be using a safe cleaner. Unfortunately, you can’t count on the products in the cleaning aisle to fall under that category. Conventional cleaners are full of harmful ingredients, and even ones that are marketed as clean- we’re looking at you Mrs. Myers- contain Fragrance, which is too toxic an ingredient to regularly be spraying through your house.
We’ve got a recipe for you that is free of synthetic fragrance, SLS, and any other junk you’ll find in conventional cleaners, yet does a damn good job at cleaning. This cleaner uses the natural mineral compound borax, or sodium borate. Borax works to disinfect and increase the effectiveness of the other ingredients in the cleaner. Borax can be purchased at most grocery stores.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to not mix this cleaner with bleach or bleach based cleaners because ammonia and bleach create a toxic gas that can be dangerous.
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 cup ammonia
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 2 teaspoons borax
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Feel free to add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for fragrance.
Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake until borax dissolves. Spray and wipe as you would any other household cleaner.
